About Melons and Watermelons
You don’t need fancy recipes to enjoy fully ripened melons and watermelons. Just slice and enjoy. Cantaloupes and muskmelons have an internal seed cavity that should be removed before eating. We pick melons when they are ripe in the field but many varieties, especially cantaloupes, benefit from a couple days on the counter to fully develop their flavor. Cold temperatures ruin melon flavor so only store in the fridge if it is quite ripe or if it is already cut open. Most melons should be quite fragrant when ready to open. We grow many different kinds of melons and watermelons. Don’t be surprised if the flesh of a watermelon is yellow, pink or orange! Melons keep for about a week at room temperature but storage can vary greatly depending on ripeness and temperatures.
Cucumber and Cantaloupe Salad
1 ripe cantaloupe, seeded and diced
2-3 medium cucumbers, sliced
1 bunch Arugula, chopped
¼ cup fresh lime juice
¼ cup olive oil
Salt & pepper
Whisk together lime juice, olive oil and salt & pepper. Combine cucumbers, cantaloupe and Arugula. Drizzle salad with the dressing.
Walla Walla Sweet Onion and Watermelon Salsa
2 C watermelon, seeded & chopped
3/4 C Walla Walla sweet onion
3/4 C canned black beans, drained & rinsed
1/4 C jalapeno or Hungarian hot wax peppers, minced
1/4 C fresh cilantro or parsley, chopped
Juice of 1/2 lime
1/2 tsp salt
Mix all ingredients together in a bowl. Chill for at least 1 hour before serving.
